There are so many thing you can do with a banner such as animation which will make it "flashy" and grab the attention of people coming to your site and they will at least notice the banner. You can have what it called "mouse over" in which the banner changes when to mouse it positioned over the banner.

No matter how you have your banner you need to remember one important thing and that is the ultimate goal of getting people to click on your banner so make sure your banner stands out from all the rest.

Once you have your banner the way you want it then its time to do a search of sites that are related to your site and this means doing a search for related keywords and go to their site and get their email address so you can send an email to every site that pertains to your site (that's right, competition sites) so you can let them know you want to exchange banners. You may only get a couple reply's, depending on how many sites you sent the email to but don't get discouraged because in time you will have it set up so you have your banner on other sites.

When someone puts your banner on their site they will also want you to put their banner on your site, sometimes two to your one but that is fine when starting out because you want to get your banner out there so people will come to your site so agree to what they say about banner exchanges.

Once your site is getting high traffic then you can start charging other businesses if they choose to put their banners on your site.

If your site is getting 10,000 hits per month then you can charge from $20.00 to $50.00 per month per banner and if you get 20 banners then the profits are from $400.00 to $1000.00 per month just for placing banners on your site and the monthly income generated could even be higher if you have more banners, and once your site starts getting double the amount of hits then you charge more. Some sites charge very high prices for placing banners on their site and that is because they have thousands and thousands of hits to their site, which some have over a million per month... this may be rare but it does happen and when it does then you can charge a very high price for placing banners on your site because you can prove that your site is getting very high traffic.

Below are some ways that banner campaign's are set up
Impressions. An impression, also known as a page view, occurs whenever a page with your banner ad is visited: Once users click on a link to that page, all the page elements are downloaded by their computers so the page -- and your banner ad -- can be seen. If you pay for advertising based on impressions, the reason for tracking this metric is to make sure you receive the number of impressions you pay for.
Click-throughs. You can calculate the click-through rate (CTR) each ad receives by dividing the number of clicks on the ad by the number of impressions served. Basically, the CTR indicates the percentage of people who saw your ad then clicked on it. CTRs are helpful for judging the success of the ad's content, that is, its text and graphics, and its placement on the page. The assumption is the more effective the ad content and placement, the more people will notice and will click on the ad.
Referrals. These are the specific URLs visited by users immediately before they came to your site. By capturing referral information, you can tell which sites -- and therefore which marketing tactics, such as banner ads -- send potential customers your way.

A good web advertising campaign is a combination of both targeted buys on highly branded sites and efficient, broad reach buys on medium sized sites. At the same time that you create a brand presence on relevant branded sites, you should consider extending your reach to sites beyond your traditional audience. By analyzing data from both types of sites and optimizing your buys accordingly, you will more effectively plan and place your web advertising to maximize reach and reduce customer acquisition costs.

You will need to keep track of your banners so you know what works and what don't so you can make the necessary adjustments so you can gain the most hits and actual profits from your banners.
